Coloration Technology

The Society’s flagship technical journal is Coloration Technology, which has been running for 125+ years. This is published 6× a year, in both print and online format, and includes both research and review papers, along with occasional short communications and book reviews. Occasional ‘special issues’ may be published; the first ever such special issue of the journal will appear in issue 2, 2011 with a theme of the ‘quality of colour light sources’ (see the ‘call for papers’ here).

The journal is published on behalf of the SDC by Wiley-Blackwell, with SDC members eligible to substantially discounted current subscription rates and free online review articles.

Aims and scope

The primary mission of Coloration Technology is to promote innovation and fundamental understanding in the science and technology of coloured materials by providing a medium for communication of peer-reviewed research papers of the highest quality on topics ranging from dyes and pigments, to colour measurement, to the coloured substrates themselves.

Unique feature

It is the world’s oldest journal pertaining to the chemistry and science of colour, and is the vehicle for the publication of theoretical and technological papers (reviews, research articles and short communications) on subjects allied to all aspects of coloration.

Background

The journal is the definitive peer-reviewed publication of the Society and has been published continuously since 1884, undergoing many changes in both content and appearance during its long and distinguished history.

Formerly known as the Journal of the Society of Dyers and Colourists (J.S.D.C.), in 2001 it was relaunched with the title Coloration Technology. Since then the yearly number of submissions has increased markedly and the journal's impact factor has also risen, doubling in value over the course of 5 years. In 2006, the Society's annual journal Review of Progress in Coloration (published since 1969) was incorporated into Coloration Technology, combining the strengths of the two publications and allowing for more frequent delivery of authoritative reviews on a wide range of subjects relating to all aspects of colour and coloration.

Also, in 2006 the Society entered a strategic partnership with the academic publisher Wiley-Blackwell. Whilst the SDC maintains full editorial control over Coloration Technology, Wiley-Blackwell's experience as a publisher of more than 1400 journals for over 700 professional and academic societies allows the partners to consolidate, build upon and enhance the journal's successful position and reputation. There is a Coloration Technology information page on the Wiley InterScience site.

Journal information

There is a Coloration Technology information page, linked from the journal's homepage on the Wiley Interscience website: www.interscience.wiley.com/journal/colorationtechnology.

One of the many benefits of the partnership with Wiley-Blackwell is that the full 125+ years of articles in the journal’s archive can now be searched for free online at Wiley InterScience, from where individual articles can be accessed (by subscribers) or purchased. All recently published issues are fully searchable online. Further information about online access is available.

Each article is peer-reviewed under the control of the Editorial Panel, with the aim being to maintain the high level of scientific content in the research papers it publishes. Any potential referee for the journal should first read the ‘Refereeing Procedures Guidelines’ available here.

Author guidelines

A summary ‘Author Guidelines’ document is available, with the full guidelines available on the Wiley Interscience site. The topics of papers covered in the journal range from dyes and pigments, to colour measurement, to the coloured substrates themselves (a list of subjects covered is given in the full author guidelines), with both research and review papers included, along with occasional short communications (see guidelines here) and book reviews.

Accelerated publication procedure (APP)

In order to benefit from the accelerated publications procedure (APP) for short communications, we ask authors to specifically adhere to certain guidelines when preparing manuscripts for submission; articles may then be eligible for the APP route, at the discretion of the editorial team.

Submissions

If you wish to submit a research article to Coloration Technology, please visit: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/cte. Most review articles published in the journal are specifically commissioned by the editorial team, although we welcome ideas from other authors. If you wish to contribute a review to the journal, please submit a brief synopsis which will then be considered by our Publications Committee, or submit your request using the relevant form on the downloads page.
