Colour Makers and Consumers: Heinrich Caro’s British Network

Heinrich Caros was one of the outstanding colourists of the 19th century; from 1868 to the end of the 1880s he directed the main technical developments at the BASF company. Previously he had worked in Manchester for Roberts, Dale & Co., where he introduced synthetic dyestuffs and became closely involved in process management, sales and service. This wide-ranging experience and his close contact with British manufacturers of intermediates and colorants, as well as with customers, especially the printers of Lancashire, proved invaluable after Caro returned to Germany in 1866.
