John Michael Wyles – The Colourist Article

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of our dear friend and long-standing SDC member, John Michael Wyles.
John first joined the Society in 1956 while studying Colour Chemistry at the University of Leeds. After graduating with a BSc (Hons) in 1959, he began his career with Yorkshire Dyeware Company, later Yorkshire Chemicals plc, where he built a successful career in both technical service and research.
From the very beginning, John was an active and enthusiastic member of the SDC. Starting in the Leeds Junior Section, where he went on to become Chairman, he later served on the West Riding Region Committee, often stepping up as Honorary Secretary. When the Huddersfield and Manchester Regions merged with West Riding to create the Northern Region, John’s steady guidance helped ensure the transition was a smooth one.
John gave so much of his time and energy to the Society. He served on many committees, and in 1982 was recognised with the SDC Gold Medal “for exceptional service in connection with the Colour Index.”
More than his many contributions, John will be remembered for his warmth, kindness, and generosity in sharing his knowledge. He was a loyal supporter of the SDC and a much-loved member of the Northern Region. His presence, wisdom, and friendship will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
John always greeted you with a ready smile… just like the photo.
I enjoyed getting to know John in my time at Yorkshire Chemicals. Always cheerful and helpful.
