Substituent Effects on the Colour, Dyeing and Fastness Properties of 4-Arylamino-5-nitro-(and amino)-1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone and 4-Arylamino-8-nitro-(and amino)-1,5-dihydroxyanthraquinone Disperse Dyes

Condensation of arylamines with 4,5-dinitro-1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone and 4,8-dinitro-1,5-dihydroxyanthraquinone afforded the corresponding 4-arylamino derivatives, reduction of which gave 4-arylamino-5-amino-1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinones. The influence of various electron donor and acceptor substituents in the arylamino residue is assessed and dyeing and fastness properties of the dyes on polyester evaluated. Comparison is also made between the bromo-substituted derivatives obtained by bromination of the 4-anilino derivatives with those unambiguously synthesised from condensation with bromoanilines
