The Use of Disperse Dyes Containing Diester Groups and Fibre Reactive Dyes Containing Phosphonic Acid Reactive Groups to Produce New Discharge and Resist Printing Styles on Polyester, Cellulose and Polyester-Cellulose

The chemistry of a range of disperse dyes containing diesters of carboxylic acids is described showing how by converting the dye from its diester form to its free acid form during the fixation process it is possible to obtain discharge printing effects on polyester material. The use of this technique in practical situations will be described. The chemistry of a new range of fibre reactive dyes containing phosphonic acid groups which react with cellulosic fibres under neutral or acid conditions is then described. Methods by which these dyes can be used in conjunction with dyes which react with the fibre under alkaline conditions to obtain resist printing affects on cellulosic fabrics will be discussed, with particular reference to the practical implementation of these techniques. Finally it is shown how, by combining the above two techniques described for polyester and cellulosic fabrics, it is possible to obtain discharge prints on polyester-cellulose with a design potential not previously obtainable. Special emphasis is given to describing the implementation of the technique to practical situations
