Brighteners are a special class of fluorescent dye, requiring illumination resembling average daylight for their colorimetric evaluation. Formulae have been devised for assessing whiteness and an easy-to-follow description of the methods based on them are presented. Problems still unsolved and moves to standardise whiteness assessment are reported
