SDC Midlands Region AGM & regional heat of the International Design Competition 2019

The Midlands Region regional heat of the 2019 International Design Competiton ‘Colour and Nature’ will be held at Nottingham Trent University on Wednesday 6th March from 2.00pm.  Following the judging, there will be a guest presentation, a free buffet and the Midlands Region AGM plus announcement of the winner of the regional heat of the SDC International Design Competititon.

Entries will be judged by a panel of respected textile industry professionals including:

Louise Draper, Lead Designer for Style Library, Harlequin and Anthology brands

Caroline Perkins, Textile Consultant Owner of Wilson Design Collective

Jane Middleton-Smith- Senior Archivist, John Smedley

Caroline Perkins has a wealth of textile home experience. She left Loughborough University with a printed textile degree and worked alongside Gill Nono for a while and created a furnishing collection. She then got a junior position at Next and worked her way up in that department to senior home manager. She was then head hunted by George Home and worked there and has over 8 yrs in that business. She has a wealth of commercial knowledge across a diverse range of products areas , kitchen / bath, cushions, rugs, curtains etc.

Caroline will also be a judge for the regional heat of the International Design Competition along with Louise Draper who comments below:

I have been the lead designer for Harlequin for over 18 years, and 8 years for the Anthology brand. I have recently become a freelancing consultant for the Style library group, enabling me to work across the brands- Harlequin, Anthology, Scion, Zoffany, Sanderson and Morris. As well as allowing me to pursue a new business venture with my sister which is something we have always wanted to do from leaving Loughborough University with Printed Textiles degrees. 

Harlequin is known for its bold fabrics and stunning wallpapers, vivid use of colour and bold contemporary designs. It is a very fashion lead brand, inspired by catwalk fashion. I have produced many of their best selling designs and collections over the years. I have a wealth of knowledge on how to pull a commercial collection together. My passion is colour and pattern! Colour trends and palettes are key to a successful collection and this is one of my main focuses. Creating inspirational colour boards is key. Colouring a design is so important – mixing colours together, the proportions of colour, the depth and saturation of colour is vital as this evokes a feeling and mood. I spend many hours colouring and re -colouring a design to achieve the best look it can possibly be, always keeping in mind a commercial angle but trying to push and champing a new colour group helps keep things fresh and exciting. 

My other love is innovation and I have a desire to push the boundaries of manufacturing of wallpaper.  I think this all stems from my background as I was the junior Designer for Anstey Wallpaper before my time at Harlequin. This gave me a great insight in to the world of wallpaper and the manufacturing capabilities that Anstey has to offer.   Anthology is a fantastic brand that I was able to be part of, combining my love of textures and tactile surfaces, along with the innovation of inks, substrates, and embosses, this enabled me to formed a very diverse portfolio of wall coverings for contract and domestic use. Anthology ultimately offers a very diverse, sleek modern and stylish look, and again colour is a main factor in provoking a feeling and mood . Many hours go into colouring a collection, and the combination of colour groups is key. Most of the designs are inspired by organic forms and so by keeping close to nature with the colouring this helps maintain a mature and sophisticated palette. Precious stone, minerals and metallics are key to this brand, so reference to these colours are vital and being clear on the vision really helps embrace a brands identity.’
