Charles Ross – ‘Disruption – is it right for business in 2017?’  The presentation will centre on whether, in the era of ‘post-truth’ being the expression of last year, it is necessary for revolution – as opposed to evolution to become the practice that companies should adopt. There will be detail involving washing habits, Durable Water Resistant finishes, Generation Z, & geo-politics in textiles.

Charles is what Gladwell refers to as a Connector, but others think he knows things about technical textiles as he was one of the original developers of the Masters in Performance Sportswear Design 20 years ago (handling the variety of subjects it involves has meant that some of the information has stuck!). Originally an Outward Bound Instructor when he returned to the UK in the late 80s he transferred to the textile side of outdoor activities at the same time that fleece & Goretex appeared as it was more inviting than the dark, cold, wet & windy conditions… With such a specialised subject he appears at a variety of Universities from Falmouth to the RCA, via DeTao in Shanghai to Oregon. Somehow he has been co-opted into the Wrap.org.uk project looking at waste textiles; is one of the team leaders at the Do Lectures in Wales (known as the Abbey Road of the Mind festival); works mentoring with the Design Council & InnovateUK; sits on the European Outdoor Group’s Sustainability team; & writes columns in the b2b press. He has also married into the HG Kippax screenprinting engineers.
