How to nominate your peers for an SDC 2024 Medal
Do you know someone who’s making a real difference in the colour community? Perhaps they’ve significantly contributed to our Society’s educational activities? Or led the way with research and innovation? Well, don’t be shy – we’d love to hear all about them.
With nominations now open for our SDC 2024 Medals, this is your opportunity to celebrate the outstanding contributions of your peers by putting them forward for this prestigious honour. Here, we explain how to do it.
What are the SDC Medal awards?
The SDC Medal Awards are prestigious honours bestowed by the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) to recognise outstanding contributions in the field of coloration. These awards celebrate the achievements of individuals who have made significant impacts in areas such as education, research, innovation, and industry service.
Who can nominate?
All individual voting and non-voting members of the SDC can submit nominations. Please note that company members, college or university members, and student members are not eligible to nominate. You also cannot nominate yourself.
Who can be nominated?
It doesn’t matter if they’re an SDC member or have never heard of SDC, any coloration professional who’s made a significant impact can be nominated for a medal. Whether they’re leaders in colour science, dedicated to their specific field, or enthusiastic contributors, we want to recognise their achievements.
How to make your SDC Medal nomination
Thinking about making a nomination for this year’s SDC Medal? We’ve made it simple:
- Gather your nominee’s details. This includes your nominee’s full name, email, phone number, and postal address. Remember to keep your nomination confidential to ensure it remains a delightful surprise for the nominee if they’re selected.
- Prepare supporting evidence. Please assume our SDC Medal Committee does not know your nominee. So, even if you consider them ‘well known’, you’ll also need to provide a supporting evidence statement highlighting why they deserve the award. If you have any additional documents to support your nomination, make sure to have them ready for upload.
- Get support from a Seconder. Each nomination needs backing by a Seconder, who should be a current SDC individual member. If you’re unsure who to ask, we can help identify potential seconders.
- Complete our online form. Submit your nomination via our form, which includes further detailed guidance. If you wish to nominate more than one individual, please use a separate form for each nomination.
What are the SDC Medal categories?
From your nomination, our SDC Medal Committee will decide if a medal should be awarded, as well as the type of medal to be conferred based on nomination information. These are broken down into three categories:
– Gold: Awarded for significant or outstanding contributions.
– Silver: Recognises prolonged and dedicated service.
– Bronze: Given for enthusiastic and sustained work, often at a regional or committee level.
Each medal, produced by the renowned Fattorini & Sons, is a valuable item. The Silver Medal is made of 92.5g of sterling silver, the Gold Medal is silver coated in 24 ct hard gold plate, and the Bronze Medal is crafted from bronze.
Please note: these categories are not hierarchical or indicative of greater or lesser recognition: instead, the type of medal awarded corresponds to the nature of the nomination.
What happens next?
Our awards operate on a rolling cycle, but nominating now could see your nominee honoured and awarded with a medal at our Day of Celebration in York, in November 2024.
Once you’ve made your nomination, the Society will notify the individual if they are successfully nominated, and you will be notified regardless of the outcome of the Medals Committee decision, which is final. To avoid any disappointment, nominated individuals will not be informed of their nomination.
