As the Course on Dyeing of Natural Fibres moves on to Cellulosics we have again given you the diagram of fibre classification. You should by now be able to identify fibres by there abbreviated names so take the time to memorise these.

The lecture provided here is the introduction. In the notes to this lecture there is a preface which it is important for you to read and understand. Many of the definitions are general for textiles and so will already have appeared in the Lessons on wool dyeing. There will however be new definitions which you will have to learn.

When considering Textile Fibres the following general account of their classification, development, basic of polymers, , orientation, order and crystallinity as well as models of fibre structure provides insight and explanation of some of the concepts given in the following lessons. This publication by John Shore – Coloration of Textiles – Chapter 1 published by the SDC provides some useful background and further information on Cotton structure as well as aspect of structure in the dyeing process. Some of the diagrams are useful to explain the concepts within the various lessons.
