Dr Christine Holdstock covered the reasons why we need to measure colour and focused on the colour measurement of surfaces. She looked at the history of colour matching experiments which led to the development of instrumental colour measuring systems. The relationship between the way that the human eye and brain interprets colour appearance was explored to illustrate how equations have been developed to allow colour measuring instruments to “mimic” the human eye.
