Dyes in History and Archaeology (DHA) is an annual international conference that focuses on the academic discussion of dyes and organic pigments used in the past. Every year since 1982, this meeting draws together conservators, curators, (technical) art historians, craftspeople, artists, scientists, and academics from museums, universities, research centres, and other public or private institutions.

The aim of the conference is to bring these specialists together to delve deeply into the history, production, application, and properties of organic colourants, as well as their analytical characterization and identification. The focus is often on textile objects, but also on other substrates as well as painted surfaces.

The 43rd annual meeting will be hosted in Leeds by the Society of Dyers and Colourists.

Leeds has a rich history in textiles and colour for many different uses. It was the centre of textile trading and manufacture from the 18^th Century including the selling of dyes. Through Wood and Bedford, dye suppliers, it has the street name Cudbear street and was the home to world renowned dye manufacturer Yorkshire Chemicals. But once known as the city of 100 trades it used colour in ceramics and paints all manufactured in the city and was well known as a printing centre.

Join us in the Society’s 140^th year of existence and the centenary of the Colour Index ^TM  to explore the rich history of dyes in history and have the opportunity to see some of the newly uncovered SDC Textile Collection!
