Brand Tirupur: Broadening the value horizons in apparel
Our esteemed colleagues at SDC India recently gathered in Coimbatore for a conference focused on the apparel industry in Tirupur, Tamil Nadu, its growth and development, and implications further afield.
Tirupur is a key player in the knitted garment sector, with such items outweighing woven apparel for the export market. Manufacture is clustered, with individual units providing different stages of production including dyeing, bleaching, printing and garmenting, and this has been very successful for the region.
In one of the technical sessions at the conference, Monisha Boopathi, brand manager for Jay Chemical Industries Ltd, highlighted this success and suggested that it could be used as a template for future sites across India. She said there was scope for as many as 75 new textile hubs to be created using this model.
A panel discussion at the event explored how to ensure sustainability for the business model in its potential role as an incubation centre for other sites, and future brands.
The SDC’s president – and chairman of NimkarTek – Ullhas Nimkar, highlighted the importance of colour education in these new pursuits, as well as the risks of fast fashion and the value in correct chemical use when producing garments for the apparel industry.
Many other speakers shared their insight and expertise in these areas and contributed their thoughts on the evolution of Tirupur’s textile cluster production. The full report of the event from SDC India is available to all here.
