An amazing 420 entries from Thailand and Singapore flooded into the national heats of the SDC International Design Competition.
And after a difficult judging task, the winners were revealed. For Thailand, fashion design major Chawakorn Tongprasri of Rajamangala University of Technology Krungthep was awarded first place.
Taught by Napat Yosyingyong, he was one of 320 entrants from 10 colleges all over Thailand. The final took place at Thailand Textile Institute and was judged by well-known figures in the textile and fashion industry.
For Singapore, Choi Nakyeong of Raffles Design Institute was the overall victor, following 100 entries from three schools including Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts NAFA and Temasek Polytechnic Design School. Choi’s lecturer was Arzelle van der Merwe.
A winner for Sri Lanka has also been chosen – Ushira Ramindi Ratnakara, a second-year fashion design and textile student at the Academy of Design. She triumphed with her creations influenced by both traditional dance attire and period costume from the Tudor and Victorian eras.
As was reported last year, Roha Sikandar of National College of Arts, Rawalpindi, won the Pakistan heat in February 2020, which attracted 320 entries.
All of our national winners will be taking their places at the online grand finale of the International Design Competition on Tuesday 30 November, to find out who will be crowned our overall winner.
The exciting event will feature a presentation from the well-known British designer, Wayne Hemingway MBE, who will talk about his creative life and career so far.
Special thanks must go to our co-ordinators all over the world, facilitating our contest. They include Yogesh Gaikwad in India, Paul Santokhi in Ireland, Wiwat Hirunpruk in Thailand, Dr Muhammad Mohsin in Pakistan and Dro Tan in Singapore.
Graham Clayton, Chief Executive of the SDC, said: “The number of entrants for our competition, and the sheer quality across the board, has been phenomenal – especially given the disruptions of the pandemic. We’re delighted to see students’ energy and passion for textile coloration, the world over.”
