Which of our talented trio will be the UK winner of the SDC International Design Competition?
All eyes are on the UK final of the SDC International Design Competition, following the exciting regional heats.
A talented trio of three students are vying for the title, to be revealed at our headquarters in Bradford at an event at 9.30 am on Friday 19 May.
This time the theme was Colour For Good: For planet and people, the competition is globally recognised, and has helped to launch the careers of many creative textile careers over the years.
Judges have had a tough time so far in 2023, as standards of entries have been of such a high quality.
The Northern Heat winner was Sophie Gratton of Leeds Arts University with her entry, Point Of View. Sophie created an engaging, comforting and grounding colour palette for use in textile sensory aids for adults with autism.
Runners-up were Ruta Vronevskyte and Emily Criddle from Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh. Two students also received highly commended certificates. They were Clemmie Murdoch from Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh, and Ella Hancock from Manchester Fashion Institute, Manchester Metropolitan University.
The London and Southern Heat winner was Scarlet Gray from London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London, with her entry, Threaded Together. Scarlet used a blend of hand craft and digital techniques to upcycle silk chiffon deadstock fabric to a luxury standard.
Runners-up were Alice Jakoby from University of Falmouth and Caterina Zannin from London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London.
The Midlands Heat winner was Emily Butler from Loughborough University, with her entry, Finding the unexpected amongst the living. Emily was inspired by British canals and their hidden beauty, developing screen printing pastes from nettles, blackberries, and rosemary, for biodegradable fabrics and furniture restoration.
Runners-up were Naomi Hall and Katie Taylor from De Montfort University.

Our UK winners will go up against entrants from Bangladesh, India, Ireland, South Africa in the global grand final of the competition in November — watch this space!
