The Use of Video Cameras of Remote Colour Measuremen

It is proposed that video cameras can be used for the measurement of colour in certain applications. It is shown that under carefully controlled conditions, a three-chip CCD camera can achieve a repeatability of 0.33 CIELAB units, according to the CIE 1976 L*a*b* equation. The advantages of video cameras over colorimeters and spectrophotometers are explained, and applications are suggested in which these advantages outweight the relative loss of precision
