The vibrancy of natural dyeing – bringing colour to life

The SDC London & Southern Region warmly invite you to an online talk by Past-president, Susan Kay-Williams, ‘The vibrancy of natural dyeing – bringing colour to life’.

What is today called Natural Dyeing was the only approach from pre-history to the mid nineteenth century, so was simply called dyeing. We can read in books about some of the colours that could be achieved but we know that colours deteriorate over time and that tapestries and textiles made many hundreds of years ago will not be the colours they were when first created. This talk will explore what can be achieved with natural dyeing in terms of colours and intensities when using the same approaches that would have been used by our ancestors a thousand years ago.

Susan is an experienced speaker in arts and craft, textiles, colour history, embroidery; has given workshops and lectures in Japan, Taiwan, China, Germany, USA, Canada and UK.
Author of The Story of Colour in Textiles and currently researching 19th century colour developments. Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and Fellow of the Society of Dyers and Colourists.
