The Colourist: SDC Strengthens International Partnership with Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology
The SDC has strengthen its international collaboration with the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology (BIFT) following a successful visit by SDC Chief Executive Dr Graham Clayton and Honorary Secretary and President Designate Professor Vien Cheung in July.
The visit marked an important step in developing closer links between our organisations, with discussions focusing on education, professional recognition, international collaboration and future events that will benefit students, graduates and the wider colour community.
A key topic was the accreditation of BIFT’s four-year undergraduate programme in materials and colour-related disciplines. Once reviewed through the SDC’s accreditation process, the programme would provide graduates with a recognised route towards Chartered Colourist (CCol) status following the required period of professional experience. The initiative reflects the Society’s ongoing commitment to supporting the next generation of colour professionals around the world.
The visit also explored ways to strengthen engagement with students through SDC membership, helping graduates remain connected with the society as they begin their professional careers.
Looking ahead, BIFT has expressed its enthusiasm to host the Grand Final of the SDC International Design Competition in 2027 at its new Beijing Future Design Lab. The purpose-built facility will provide an inspiring setting for the international event, bringing together emerging design talent from across the globe while further strengthening links between the UK and China.
Alongside the competition, discussions included plans for a collaborative Sino-UK exhibition celebrating textile and colour heritage. Drawing on collections from both organisations, the exhibition would showcase the shared history, innovation and cultural significance of colour and textiles, creating opportunities for greater academic, industrial and cultural exchange.
The visit also marked the beginning of plans to re-establish the SDC China Region. Working alongside BIFT, the SDC hopes to rebuild a strong community of members, beginning with student engagement before expanding to include graduates and Chartered Colourists as the network grows.
