Society of Dyers and Colourists updates Chartered Colourist eligibility criteria

The Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) has approved an update to the eligibility criteria for industry professional applying to become a Chartered Colourist (Ccol), following a vote in favour of the changes by the Society’s Board and its members at its recent AGM on 13 May.

The revised regulations simplify the route to Chartered Colourist status by removing the requirement for applicants to first obtain the Associate of the Society of Dyers and Colourists (ASDC) qualification through the exemption route.

Previously, applicants without the ASDC qualification were required to apply for ASDC by Exemption before progressing to Chartered Colourist. The updated regulations recognise that applicants who can demonstrate knowledge and ability equivalent to a Level 6 qualification, together with the required professional experience, may now apply directly for Chartered Colourist status.

The change also removes the previous requirement to have accrued four years’ experience before obtaining ASDC by Exemption. Instead, applicants for Chartered Colourist must demonstrate that they:

  • Are a current member of the Society of Dyers and Colourists;
  • Hold an equivalent level six qualification
  • Have normally established themselves in an appropriate occupation in colour science or technology for a minimum of two years;
  • Submit an application supported by two professionally related referees, at least one of whom is an SDC member; and
  • Satisfy the Society’s Board that they meet the requirements for Chartered Colourist status.

The ASDC qualification remains an important part of the Society’s professional qualifications framework and continues to be available through the examination-based route.

Dr Graham Clayton, CEO of the SDC said: “We are the only professional body in the world licensed to award Chartered Colourist (CCol) status. Chartered Colourist remains the internationally recognised professional designation for colour specialists, recognising individuals who have demonstrated a high level of professional competence, knowledge and commitment within colour science and technology.

“The Society believes these changes will provide a clearer and more accessible route to professional recognition while maintaining the rigorous standards expected of Chartered Colourists.”

Professionals interested in applying for Chartered Colourist status are encouraged to review the updated eligibility criteria and contact the Society for further guidance.
